The Peavey 3120 guitar amplifier head, a versatile three-channel tube amp with 120 watts of power, gives players a triple-threat tone onslaught with generous amounts of gain and tones ranging from crisp and clean to total high-gain saturation.

The 3120 amp's Lead and Rhythm channels feature gain and volume controls and an active three-band EQ, while the Clean channel offers nicely rounded tones crafted by a passive three-band EQ and volume control.

A global master volume governs the amount of power put out by its four EL34 or 6L6GC power-amp tubes, while the gain controls on the Lead and Rhythm channels adjust the amount of 12AX7 gain saturation.

The 3120 rear panel hosts a unique Peavey custom tone control feature: a three-setting damping switch that alters speaker resonance to create tight, medium and loose tones, from a precise punch for rhythmic attack to a full, widely resonant sound.

Also on the rear panel is a footswitchable effects loop with dedicated send and return controls and a line out with level control.

Peavey’s 3120 Is A Good Omen For Soulfly

The 3120 is the newest amp from Peavey and is the latest demonstration of the company’s experience in high gain tones, it was always going to be a heavy weight contender in the metal field.

The re-styled aesthetics and the use of EL34s retain the brutal rhythm sound and the sparkling clean tones, pushing it into a league of its own. It is hardly surprising then to find that the main exponent of the 3120 is Soulfly’s Max Cavalera. Since leading Sepultura out of Sao Paulo and into the 90’s death metal scene, Max has always pushed to make his music a little different. Whether it was incorporating world music with his death metal roots, or filling stages with his distinct camo-covered 3120 stacks, Cavalera has always made his mark.

Since the formation of Soulfly in 1997, Max has continued to tour relentlessly and produces albums with the regularity of a hungry young band. With him the whole way has been his Peavey based tone. Both with Soulfly and reunited with Sepultura drummer and brother Igor Cavalera on the Cavalera Conspiracy album, the 3120 has been a mainstay in Max’s over-used road cases. With the release of the ‘Omen’ album in May of this year, Soulfy are again taking to the road with both Max and lead guitarist Marc Rizzo both flying the flag high for Peavey as they decimate stages around Europe.
